Welcome to Your ‘House on the Lake’
Welcome to Your ‘House on the Lake’
We're so excited that you're considering a stay at our Casa Sul Lago!
Before you arrive, we kindly ask that you take a moment to read through this entire webpage.
Our home is a private retreat, and we never charge guests for their stay. Because of this, it's a little different from staying at an Airbnb or VRBO. We don't have a cleaning service or staff, so the arrival and departure process might not be quite as streamlined as what you're used to at a hotel or vacation rental. Our main goal is to make it feel like a home and make sure the house is just as welcoming and prepared for the next guest as it is for you.
If this setup doesn’t quite fit what you're looking for on this trip, no worries at all! We totally understand and hope you'll keep us in mind for a future visit. But we think a little light tidying up on your last day is a small trade-off for the joy of staying here. We hope you’ll agree!
Perched on the tranquil shores of Smith Lake in northern Alabama, Casa Sul Lago (“house on the lake” in Italian) offers the ultimate retreat. From nearly every room you’re greeted with stunning views of the lake inviting you to relax and soak in the serenity. The rustic screened side porch - complete with a stone fireplace - is ideal for a family meal or a leisurely afternoon siesta. Outside, adirondack chairs encircle a firepit with a breathtaking 270-degree lake view, while the private boat dock’s loungers provide a perfect spot to savor your morning coffee as the sun rises or to stargaze at night. Whether you’re up for a rousing game of ping-pong, a refreshing swim, an evening movie, or a paddleboard or kayak adventure along the shoreline, Casa Sul Lago offers an array of activities to rejuvenate your spirit.
With over 21,000 acres of deep, crystal-clear water and more than 600 miles of pristine shoreline, Smith Lake is a premier destination for relaxation and recreation. Rated among the cleanest man made lakes in America, enjoy direct access to the lake for swimming, fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding from the private dock, or spend a day on the lake with a rented pontoon boat available from several local marinas.

On the side entry door is a digital deadbolt. Press the “Yale” button on the top of the keypad to display the numeric keypad.
Enter the code you received.
Press the Yale button again. The deadbolt will unlock.
Once you open the door, you have :60 seconds to disarm the alarm! Enter the side door and follow the alarm beeping to find the alarm keypad. (Make an immediate right through the half bathroom and into the music room. You will see the alarm keypad on the far wall.) Enter the same code you used to open the deadbolt to disarm the alarm.
At the exterior front of the house, as pictured below, you will find a water valve directly below the master bathroom window in the mulch bed that will need to be turned on.
Simply lift off the green valve cover.
Turn the water valve one-quarter (1/4) turn counterclockwise.
Replace the valve cover.
As you’re standing in the driveway with your back to the house, you will see some landscaping/bushes planted just above the rock wall along the driveway. Walk to the left of the wall as your facing it and up on the grass. When you get behind that landscaping, and you will find a large black plastic cover.
Open the cover.
Look for the on/off valve (circled in red below) and turn it counterclockwise to turn it on.
Close the cover.
Downstairs, you will find a door to the left of the countertop just off the game/theater room that leads to a storage room. Inside the storage room you will find two breaker boxes on the wall. As you face the boxes, open the breaker box door on the right. The breaker switch at the very bottom of the left row of switches is labeled “HOT WATER HEATER”. Turn this breaker on.
As you’re facing the refrigerator in the kitchen, open the left side door of the refrigerator. Along the edge of the door, you will see a gray release handle/lever/switch. Slide the release up to open the ice maker door.
If the bin for the ice maker is sitting in the sink, install the bin back into the door and make sure the ice maker switch is in the ON position (the “—” (line) symbol should be pressed for on, and the “O” (circle) symbol should be pressed for off.)
Close the ice maker door.
It may take a few hours for the refrigerator to produce ice for the door dispenser.

Unfortunately the internet is a bit sketchy at the lake. Take advantage of being “device free” as possible! You should have plenty of bandwidth for checking email, web surfing, and streaming one movie at a time. Due to less than ideal cell signal, you may also want to set your phone to “call from wifi” for phone calls.
There is a thermostat at the top of the stairs for the upstairs, and one in the game/theater room next to the storage room door for the downstairs.
The outdoor string lights create the perfect ambience for sitting in the adirondack chairs on the bluff surrounding the fire pit. To turn on the outdoor string lights, simply grab the extension cord in the storage room and using the outlet directly outside the storage room door, plug the lights in. (Look for the light plug suspended from one of the tree they are hanging on..
Please enjoy the BREEO smokeless fire pit. A few very IMPORTANT NOTES:
You will find a garden hose in the basement storage room and a water spigot just to the left of the exterior storage room double doors as you face them. PLEASE HAVE THE HOSE CONNECTED AND ON WHILE ENJOYING YOUR FIRE AS A PRECAUTION TO PUT OUT ANY LITTLE FLARE UPS THAT MIGHT SPARK THE PINE NEEDLES OR GRASS. DO NOT LEAVE THE FIRE UNATTENDED OR GO TO BED BEFORE THE FIRE HAS BEEN EXTINGUISHED!!!
Please DO NOT pour water into the BREEO fire pit to put it out. Plan accordingly and stop feeding the fire about an hour before you are ready to call it quits. Once the fire has mostly died out, place the metal cover back over the fire pit to starve the fire of oxygen.
There are some blankets on the shelf in the storage room for those chilly nights where the BREEO just isn’t enough.
For best results starting a fire in the BREEO (for those who were not boy scouts)…
You’ll find all sorts of small ‘kindling twigs’ on the ground all around the fire pit. Collect a pile about the size of a soccer ball and place in the BREEO with a mix of some scrap paper.
Build a “tepee” of longer twigs and branches around the kindling.
Pour just a very small amount (about 1/2 a cup) of Tiki lamp oil (found in the storage room on the shelves) over the kindling pile and tepee.
Build a tepee of about three logs (found under the side porch next to the fire pit) over the smaller tepee.
Light and enjoy! (It will take 10-20 minutes for the fire to burn big enough and hot enough for the smokeless feature of the BREEO to take effect.)
Please use and enjoy the dock.
The swimming stairs are hinged and can be lowered into the water. You are welcome to use the two large "floating lily pads" (hanging on the boat dock), the two kayaks, and the two paddleboards (you are required to wear life jackets for the kayaks and paddleboards). There are life jackets, water noodles/floats, and the paddles for the paddleboards and kayaks in the storage box on the dock. The combination for the lock is: 1036.
There are towels on the shelf in the storage room if you need them for the dock. Just plan to wash and return then to the shelf before you leave.
Unfortunately the pontoon boat and two jet skis are not available for use, but there are several places around the lake that rent boats. Here is a link that might be helpful: boat rentals.
We ask that you please return everything to the way you found it when you are done with it each day. Do not leave any items on the dock overnight or unattended as the wind can quickly blow them into the lake.
Please swim and enjoy the water AT YOUR OWN RISK. NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN UNATTENDED. DO NOT SWIM ALONE WITHOUT FLOTATION DEVICES. KNOW YOUR LIMITS AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY FIRST. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR SAFTEY WHILE ON, IN, OR AROUND THE LAKE! There is absolutely nothing better than a beautiful day on the lake, BUT PLEASE take precautions and make smart choices for your safety and the safety of your friends and loved ones.
NOTE: Smith Lake is a “dry lake”, meaning it is illegal to have alcohol on the water - including on any docks. The authorities do patrol the lake (yes, with binoculars from their boats believe it or not) and will ticket & fine you (last we heard it was $500) for having alcohol on the water.
Please bring as much food as you would like and feel free to use any of the appliances, dishes, bowls, silverware, etc. As a courtesy, please to not eat any of the homeowner’s personal food in the pantry, refrigerator, freezer, etc.
DO NOT USE ANY ABRASIVES, BRUSHES, OR SCRUBBING PADS ON THE STOVE TOP, REFRIGERATOR, DISHWASHER OR MICROWAVE. THEY WILL SCRATCH THE SURFACES. Use only the soft side of a sponge, paper towel or soft rag. There are cleaning supplies below the sink. The vinegar works best on the stainless steel surfaces.
The overhead light and exhaust fan controls for the stove are above on the exhaust fan itself, or there is a remote control on the wall to the left of the stovetop. Please use the exhaust fan when frying or cooking.
There is a gas grill off the back of the side porch you are welcome to use. Simply roll the grill away from the house before use, uncover, and turn the gas valve on the tank on before use and off when finished. There are grill utensils hanging along the outdoor kitchen countertop. Please do not use the Big Green Egg.
For families with children, there is a gate for the top of the stairs behind the master bedroom door. Use at your own risk and please be sure you secure it properly if you do decide to use it! We cannot are not responsible for any stair accidents.
There are several televisions in the house and each is equipped with a FireTV. If you would like to watch any streaming services, please do not use the homeowners accounts. Login to the service using your own login and password. You should be able to figure out the input and remotes for each television.
The theater room is a bit more complicated. You are welcome to use it, but please click here for further instructions: theater room.
You are welcome to use the washer and dryer. The laundry detergent is above the utility room sink and should be added to the machine using the pull out dispensers on the top left of the washer (as pictured below) and not added directly to the washing load.
Choose your wash mode on the dial, and press start. For drying, be sure to clean the lint screen just inside the dryer door before each use, select your dry mode and press start.
Pro Tip: When using the screened-in porch, opening the three windows can make a big difference in airflow and temp!
It’s our prayer that whether you were seeking a peaceful retreat to refresh your spirit, or a lively family getaway to create lifelong memories, that Casa Sul Lago was a blessing to you and your loved ones.
Please read the checklist below carefully as you prepare to depart. Plan to spend a couple of hours getting the lake house ready for your departure. Once you are packed up and ready to go, please click the “Departure Checklist” button below, complete the checklist, and submit.
Please double check that everything on the dock has been secured and put away, including the storage bin being locked and the ladder pulled up out of the water and secured with the rope.
Strip the sheets and pillow cases from any beds that you used during your stay. Bring all of the bedding and towels to the laundry room. Do a load of sheets first, then a load of towels seperately. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE TOWELS AND SHEETS ARE NOT WASHED TOGETHER AS IT WILL ‘PILL’ THE SHEETS IF THEY ARE WASHED TOGETHER! (For washing instructions, see “Washer & Dryer” under “Important Notes” above.) When the wash cycle is complete, please dry and return all towels to the bathrooms and re-make all beds.
If you used any lake towels, please wash them and return them to the storage shelf.
Do not wash the kitchen towels or wash rags with the sheets and bath towels. You can just set those dirty towels on the counter above the washing machine and leave them there.
Please leave the home ready for the next guest by:
Sweeping and/or vacuuming each room used (there is a broom and vacuum in the utility closet in the laundry room for the upstairs, and a vacuum in the closet under the stairs for the downstairs.)
The kitchen, including the stove, should be wiped down and all dishes washed and put away.
All bathroom counters, showers, and toilets should be cleaned and wiped down (there are cleaning wipes, toilet brushes, etc. supplied in each bathroom.)
